Potential Dangers of the World Heritage

Changing terrains, natural disasters, hewing and destruction due to ignorance of the mankind, wars between races and religions, all of these are threats to World Heritages. Massive constructions, rapid urbanization and development of tourism, improper use of lands may damage these Heritages permanently. Therefore, the UNESCO established “The List of World Heritage in Danger”, when properties are facing threats, they will be inscribed to the list immediately.

Inscription of properties in the list allows the World Heritages Committee to, in consultation with the related state party, develop and to adopt rescue programmes, the status will be closely monitored. All efforts must be made to restore the properties’ values, and enable its name to be removed from the list as soon as possible.

The above examples illustrated that World Heritages are facing threats of various kinds. Fortunately China, with limited resources, put great efforts into the conservation of World Heritages.  For instance, Mogao Caves of China, is protected from the destructions from sandstorms. Another example is the conservation of endangered species by conducting researches and making protective laws. These measures assure that these heritages can be inherited, and benefit our next generations.
